Delta SkyMiles Gold Amex Review: The Entry Ticket to Delta Perks

The Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card is the entry-level travel rewards card for occasional-to-frequent Delta flyers who want core flight perks without a premium price tag. It won't buy you status or lounge doors — and we'll be blunt about that below — but its bag benefits alone can out-earn its fee by the second flight of the year.

- Welcome Offer: Varies by promotion and applicant eligibility — recent offers have reached 70,000–90,000 bonus miles after meeting tiered spending requirements in the first six months.

Key Travel Benefits & Credits
- Free Checked Bags — Now Two: Your 1st checked bag flies free on Delta flights worldwide, and as of June 2026, Gold cardholders also get a 2nd checked bag free on domestic Delta flights. Both apply to you and up to 8 companions on the same reservation — a family of four saves $140–$280 per domestic round-trip.
- TakeOff 15: An automatic 15% discount on award redemptions for Delta-operated flights booked with miles on delta.com or the Fly Delta app. A 40,000-mile flight costs you 34,000.
- Priority Boarding: Zone 5 Main Cabin Priority Boarding for you and up to 8 companions — overhead bin space secured.
- $100 Delta Stays Credit: Up to $100 back per calendar year on prepaid hotel or vacation rental bookings made through Delta Stays.
- Rideshare Credits: Monthly statement credits on eligible U.S. rideshare purchases (Uber, Lyft, etc.) — enrollment required.
- $200 Delta Flight Credit: Spend $10,000 in eligible purchases in a calendar year and receive a $200 flight credit.
- 20% In-Flight Savings: Statement credits covering 20% of Delta in-flight food, beverage, and headset purchases.
The Status Reality Check
The Fine Print Catch: The Delta Gold does not earn Medallion Qualifying Dollars (MQDs) through spending, and it does not include the $2,500 MQD Headstart. Delta's status ladder now runs entirely on MQDs (roughly $1 spent on Delta fares = 1 MQD):

Status Hacks & Power-User Strategies
Hack 1: The MQD Headstart Quad-Card Stack
The higher-tier Delta cards — Delta Platinum Amex ($350) and Delta Reserve Amex ($650) — each deposit an automatic $2,500 MQD Headstart every card year. Delta caps this at four deposits per qualification year, one per eligible card type — and that cap is exactly the play:
- Delta Platinum (Personal) + Delta Platinum Business + Delta Reserve (Personal) + Delta Reserve Business = 4 × $2,500 = $10,000 MQDs
- That's instant Gold Medallion status without stepping on a plane.
Hack 2: The Gold-to-Platinum Upgrade Path
A popular sequence: open the Delta Gold for the welcome bonus and $0 intro fee, enjoy the bag perks for a year, then product-change to the Delta Platinum in Year 2 to unlock the MQD Headstart and the annual Companion Certificate. (As with all product changes, no new welcome bonus — collect the Gold's bonus first.)
Hack 3: The Delta Vacations MQD Accelerator
Booking flights normally earns MQDs only on the base fare. But book a Delta Vacations package (flight + hotel or rental car) and you earn $1 MQD for every $1 of the total package price — hotels, cars, and activities included.
- The Play: Sitting $1,500 MQDs short of a status tier in November? A $1,500 weekend getaway package through Delta Vacations closes the entire gap — and paying with the Delta Gold stacks 2X SkyMiles on top.
Hack 4: Stack TakeOff 15 on Flash Sales
Delta runs unannounced SkyMiles Flash Sales (Europe round-trips for 34,000 miles, domestic hops for 10,000). The Gold's 15% TakeOff discount applies on top of sale pricing — turning a 10,000-mile flash-sale fare into 8,500 miles.
The Verdict: Who Is This Card For?
If you fly Delta even 2–3 times a year, the checked-bag math alone justifies the card: at $35–$70 saved per round-trip per person — doubled for domestic second bags, multiplied across companions — the $150 fee (waived in year one) disappears fast.
- Get it if: you check bags on Delta a few times a year, redeem SkyMiles for Delta flights (TakeOff 15 is a permanent 15% rebate), or want a low-cost first step into the Delta ecosystem with an upgrade path.
- Skip it (or upgrade past it) if: you're chasing Medallion status or Sky Club access — those live on the Delta Platinum and Reserve tiers, via the Headstart stack above.
